AI use policy

We want this class to reflect what solving problems with ML in the real world looks like — which means different policies depending on where you’re working, the data you’re using, and the privacy and confidentiality requirements. For the data used in this class, as long as you don’t share or upload any confidential information to any AI tool (on the web), you can use any tool you want. You are accountable for the output and the work you submit. (Many of these models are trained on plenty of bad ML code and practices.)

We also want you to understand what the AI tools are good for, where they fall short, and how to best use them to solve real problems. So use them — but be skeptical, review and test the output, and be ready to share what you find with the class. We may end up doing a team Q&A to understand what you used and how.

tl;dr

  • Use anything you want, but you’re accountable for what you submit.
  • Be prepared to disclose and share what you used and how, so others can learn.

Academic integrity

Violations of class and university academic integrity policies will not be tolerated. Any copying, cheating, plagiarism, or other integrity violation will be reported to your advisor and the dean of students, and will result in immediate failure of the course.

Attendance

Because much of this course is discussion with your classmates, attending each session matters both for your own learning and for what others get out of it. You’re expected to attend every session, and participation factors into your grade. If something will require you to miss a class (illness, conferences, etc.), please let the course staff know in advance.

Communication support

The Global Communication Center (GCC) offers free help with written and oral communication assignments, located in Hunt Library.

Student wellbeing & support

Students with disabilities. We value inclusion and will work to ensure all students have the resources they need. Use the Office of Disability Resources’ online system to notify us of accommodations as early as possible, or contact them at access@andrew.cmu.edu.

Health and wellness. A range of challenges can interfere with learning. CMU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) is here to help: call 412-268-2922 or visit cmu.edu/counseling. Asking for support sooner rather than later is almost always helpful. If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal or in danger of self-harm, call for help day or night — CaPS: 412-268-2922; Re:solve Crisis Network: 888-796-8226. If the situation is life-threatening, call campus police (412-268-2323) or 911.

Discrimination and harassment. Everyone has a right to feel safe and respected on campus. To make a report, contact the Office of Title IX Initiatives at tix@andrew.cmu.edu or 412-268-7125. Confidential resources are available through CaPS and the University Health Center. More at cmu.edu/title-ix.

Student Academic Success Center (SASC). SASC offers academic coaching, peer tutoring, communication support, language and cross-cultural support, and supplemental instruction — free workshops and one-on-one options for all disciplines and levels.
